Meditation for the Fifth Week of Lent:
The fifth week of Lent was once known as “Passiontide”, an intensification of the penitential character of Lent; as you probably noticed this past weekend, the Church still covers images and statues with purple veils during this time in preparation for the sorrowful events of the Passion which we commemorate next week. The Church is in mourning with Her Lord.
This “intensification” is mirrored in today’s piece by Antonio Lotti (1667-1740), which adds voice upon voice in a tense choral arrangement of the words of the Nicene Creed, the same statement of our Faith that we recite at Mass each Sunday:
“For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried…”
