- Escape Rooms Outing!
  
  Our next big outing will be to Celebration Escape Rooms on March 29th. Here's the schedule:
  Meet at St. Philip's at 1:45pm on Saturday, Mar 29.
  Volunteer drivers will transport everyone to Celebration Escape Rooms.
  The escape room usually takes about an hour.
  We'll come back to St. Philip's for pickup at 3:45-4:00pm, depending on how quickly they escape (or don't).
  Note: If you'd prefer to transport your high schooler, or to have your high schooler transport themself, that's totally fine, just let me know by replying to this email & I'll tell you what time they should arrive at the escape room venue!
  I currently have 8 spots reserved, first-come first-serve. If 8 teens sign up, I will try to reserve an additional room to give us more space, but there is no guarantee that one will be available! So, sign up as soon as possible to guarantee your spot! The cost is $42 per teen. If cost is a barrier, let me know and we'll make it work!

Which HS Program is Right for Me?
- HS Youth Group
- HS Discipleship Groups
HS Youth Group
- This is the primary formation program for high schoolers.
  
  HS Youth Group is a larger group which meets year-round. Each meeting consists of a meal, a lesson about a moral/religious topic that the high schoolers find interesting, and sometimes a game. HS Youth Group is aimed at:
  
  Sparking holy friendships with other Catholic youth through a meal & fellowship.
  Learning about interesting faith-related topics.

HS Discipleship Groups
- This is an additional formation program for high schoolers.
  
  High school Discipleship Groups are a smaller, more personal formation setting in which the same group of 4-8 young men or young women meet year-round for personally tailored catechesis and spiritual growth. Each group has two adult mentors.
  
  As a rule of thumb, if a high schooler actively desires to grow in holiness and is willing to have some minor expectations placed on them to make that happen, then a Discipleship Group will be the more fruitful program for them. The aims of a Discipleship Group are:
  Personalized mentoring on how to live a Catholic life in students' particular lives.
  Accountability for concrete spiritual progress & holiness.
  A Catholic friend-group centered on the pursuit of holiness together.

What Happens at Meetings?
- Each meeting has three parts:
  
  A Meal - the meal is different each week.
  Social/Fellowship time, either after the meal or in the form of a game at the end of the night.
  Discussion/Lesson about a topic interesting to the high schoolers.

Supplement: HS Discipleship Groups
When & Where?
- HS Discipleship Groups meet weekly year-round. Each group's meeting day & time varies depending on the availabilities of that group's members.
  Discipleship Groups do not meet on weeks that contain a Holy Day of Obligation, the week of Ash Wednesday, or during Holy Week.
What Happens at Meetings?
- Each meeting typically has three parts:
  
  Personal check-in to see how everyone is doing.
  Check in on the pious practical habits that each student is working on developing.
  Some spiritual discussion, reading, or lesson (largely up to the mentors of each group, based on the needs of their mentees).

  I'll either find an existing group that would be a good fit, or start a new group if there are enough teens to do so.

Volunteering
- Youth Volunteers (9th-12th)
  Help with Middle School Youth Group
  High schoolers who have received Confirmation are invited to help with Middle School Youth Group in one of several roles. For this, contact the director of youth ministry.
  
  Help with Mass
  Youth can help serve Mass as an usher, lector, altar server, or extraordinary minister of Holy Communion (if you've received Confirmation). For this, CLICK HERE to go to our online form.
  Preschool/Elementary Helper
  Youth can share their faith while serving as volunteers for Elementary Formation or Catholic Camp. For this, contact the director of elementary formation.
  Share Your Musical Gifts
  Youth can join the choir! No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and the commitment to be at choir rehearsals and Mass. For this, contact the choir director.
  **Safe Environment Policies**
  Any youth in grades 7th-12th, having contact with children and/or other youth through these various volunteer roles are required to fulfill the Diocese of Fort Worth's Safe Environment program for teens, Teen Leadership. This includes a Volunteer Ministry Application and attendance of their respective Safe Environment Awareness Session for their formation grade.

  **Safe Environment Policies**
  Anyone having contact with children and youth in Formation is required to fulfill the Diocese of Fort Worth's Safe Environment program. This includes a Volunteer Ministry Application with references, a criminal background check, and attendance of a Safe Environment Awareness Session. After the initial session, volunteers must attend a renewal session every two years. Visit our Safe Environment page for more information.
Home Study Options
- Recommendations & Info
  For families who would like their children to receive religious formation exclusively at home, we recommend parents take a look at several options to determine which is best for your child. See our recommendations below, listed from least formal to most formal.
  Chosen: This is Your Catholic Faith is a video-centered curriculum produced by Ascension Press. The videos are high production-quality, but slightly kitschy in my opinion. A middle schooler likely wouldn't notice the slight kitschy-ness, but I think a high schooler might. Nonetheless, the content is very good -- clear, orthodox, and extremely easy to digest -- and there are supplemental materials to accompany the videos.

  My Catholic Faith Delivered offers separate courses on a wide selection of topics for grades 1-12. These courses tend to look more like the typical religious ed you might find in a Catholic school, but every course is different. Since every course is different, I am not able to review each one's content, but I especially recommend any of the courses involving Scott Hahn or the Didache series of textbooks (such as "Introduction to Catholicism").

  The Didache Textbook Seriesis an excellent set of textbooks covering a huge range of topics. If you're looking to go the textbook route with religious education for your children, this is the set I'd recommend above all others.
  You can check them out here (https://www.theologicalforum.org/product-category/all/), choosing "Show Filters", and filtering by "The Didache Complete Course Series". They have smaller textboox options, too, if you use the other filters to explore a bit.
  As a supplement to any of the above, the Catechism In A Year or Bible In A Year podcasts are great options for direct exposure to Scripture or to the breadth of Catholic teaching, with commentary from Father Mike Schmitz. This isn't a curriculum, like the other options I recommend here. These podcasts don't have to be done daily -- you can instead do just a few per week, as time allows.
