So what is it going to be this year? Chocolate? Starbucks? T.V? Twitter? Maybe you’re giving up something good this year for Lent. Maybe it will be something new or maybe the same old thing you give up every year. It doesn’t really matter. What is important is that you use Lent to remove distractions from your life as you try to open up your heart and mind to Jesus.
The Social Media Challenge is an opportunity for our parish to come together in our observance of Lent. It works in two ways:
1. Do good works using social media Instead of giving up social media, what if you spoke a little louder (but in a positive and charitable way) for your faith and beliefs during these next forty days? What if you sent a Facebook message to someone you know who is hurting? What if you sent a tweet to that person who needs your forgiveness? What if you just tried posting a psalm, a prayer, a positive thought on your Facebook page, your Twitter account, or your Instagram page? What if you did this for forty days? Do you think it could make a difference?
2. Give it up to make time for more important things If you still want to “give up” some social media, try giving it up for a day, two days, etc., whatever works best, but during that time, try spending a few minutes or more in prayer, reading a spiritual book, or even in silence.
At the end of each weekduring Lent, share with the parish what it is you are doing or what positive thoughts you are sharing by putting them on the post-it-notes that will be available in the Narthex. Then attach them to our Lenten Cross that will be on display.
Let’s see by the end of the forty days just what we as a parish have done to bring Christ to others during Lent in 2017.
